How to start a faceless YouTube channel with AI voice (2026 rules included)
A faceless channel with AI narration is easy to start and easy to get wrong. YouTube has specific rules for AI content, inauthentic content and links in Shorts. This guide walks through setup in order, citing YouTube’s own help pages (checked October 9, 2026).
Step 1: Create the channel and verify your phone
- Create a channel (YouTube Help: Create a YouTube channel). If you want a channel name that’s different from your personal name, or more than one channel on the same Google account, use the “channel with a business or other name” option, which creates a Brand Account.
- In YouTube Studio go to Settings → Channel → Feature eligibility and verify your phone number. That unlocks intermediate features (YouTube Help).
- Advanced features need phone verification plus either enough channel history or ID/video verification. YouTube notes that ID and video verification “isn’t available to all creators”, and that active channels following the guidelines “can usually rebuild sufficient channel history within 2 months”.
Note: YouTube limits how many channels one phone number can verify. Its help page says that if you’ve already verified 2 channels with one number, you must use a different number.
Step 2: Understand the AI-content rules before you upload
Disclosure (“AI use” setting). YouTube requires creators to disclose AI-generated or meaningfully altered content that seems realistic, such as making a real person appear to say something they didn’t, or generating a realistic scene that didn’t happen. It specifically lists “Cloning one’s own voice to create voice overs or dubs” and AI help with scripts, thumbnails and captions as things you don’t need to disclose. AI-generated music does need disclosure (YouTube Help: Disclosing use of GenAI content). You set it in YouTube Studio during upload, under Attributes → “AI use”. YouTube says disclosing “won’t limit a video’s audience or impact its eligibility to earn money.”
Inauthentic content. YouTube’s monetization policy treats mass-produced, repetitive content as not monetizable, including “image slideshows, templated storylines, or scrolling text with minimal or no narrative” and AI content made “with generic or unoriginal templates” (YouTube Help). Practically, each video needs its own substance: a real demo, a real test, a real opinion.
Step 3: Pick a voice tool and check commercial terms
You have three broad options, covered in detail in our free vs paid AI voice guide:
- Local open-source TTS (e.g. Piper): free, runs on your own computer.
- Cloud TTS with a free tier (e.g. Google Cloud Text-to-Speech): free up to a monthly character allowance, then pay per character; billing must be enabled.
- Creator-focused AI voice (e.g. ElevenLabs): more expressive voices and voice cloning. On ElevenLabs’ pricing page the commercial license is listed from the Starter plan ($6/month), so check what the Free plan allows before monetizing. Details in our pricing breakdown.
Step 4: Make the video (the faceless workflow)
- Script a 30–45 second idea with one point. Put the hook in the first sentence.
- Record the screen doing the real thing you’re talking about (the tool, the result, the numbers). This is original footage, which is what the inauthentic-content policy is asking for.
- Generate the voiceover, then edit it to the footage. Add captions (YouTube says caption creation with AI doesn’t need disclosure).
- Add the affiliate disclosure inside the video if you mention a product you’re an affiliate for. ElevenLabs’ affiliate terms, for example, require the disclosure to “appear or be spoken within the content itself and not solely in an accompanying text description” (ElevenLabs affiliate terms).
Step 5: Get viewers to your links (Shorts links aren’t clickable)
YouTube says “URLs placed in YouTube Shorts comments and Shorts descriptions are non-clickable” (YouTube Help). What does work:
- Channel profile links: put your main link (for example a “tools” page) first, and say “link on my channel page” in the video.
- Related video link on a Short, pointing to one of your own longer videos where description links are clickable. YouTube says this needs advanced feature access (YouTube Help).
A realistic timeline
New channels take time. Links can’t be clicked from Shorts, advanced features may take about two months of channel history if ID verification isn’t offered, and the YouTube Partner Program has its own thresholds. Plan on months, not days.
